Miracles. They are defined as surprising and welcoming events that are not explicable by natural or scientific laws and are therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency. Most people tend to believe in these highly improbable and extraordinary events, and there are some who think they are a beautiful depiction of make-believe. Additionally, when it comes to defining the divine agency behind these amazing developments and/or accomplishments, things tend to become even more debatable and disputable.
One popular thought among some who do believe in miracles is that they are performed by the universe. Interesting, right? So, let’s unpack the universe for a second. When you think of the universe, what comes to mind? For me, it’s all the planets in our solar system and those we don’t know about because they are hundreds of thousands of light-years away, all the stars—including the sun that we see arise during the day and the moon that we witness come alive at night—billions of galaxies, and just space in general. The universe is actually defined as being all of this and more. It’s all of space and time and their contents; all and every form of matter and energy. That translates to A LOT of stuff. Thus, when people say the universe is responsible for miracles, they are basically making it out to be a divine agency. Suffice it to say, the universe has become THE divine agency that many subscribe to today.
The Truth Shall Make You Free
Whenever I hear people refer to the universe as this divine agency that controls all and knows all, I tend to chuckle or just shake my head in disbelief or disappointment because of the foolishness that’s associated with it. I often want to ask these people, “So, who do you think created the universe? Do you think it just generated on its own?” I know there’s a popular theory among scientists that this is the case, but if you belong to a certain someone you know better. There’s only one self-generated being, and He’s the creator of the universe and everything in it.
All credit and all glory go and belong to God. He is the supreme divine agency that all other agencies must bow to. There is none greater and none higher. In the book of Genesis, we are introduced to God as the Creator; the Hebrew name is Elohim. The Bible tells us in Revelation 4:11 (KJV):
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
This means that miracles are also handcrafted by God. He is, has always been, and will always be in the business of producing miracles, signs, and wonders.
I was reminded of God’s miracle-working power when I heard the story about a 13-year-old boy who fell nearly 100 feet while attempting to take a selfie at the Grand Canyon sometime last week. His name is Wyatt Kaufman. He was visiting the Grand Canyon on vacation with his mother, stumbled, and fell from a popular trail and photo area on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim. Wyatt said he was simply trying to avoid getting in the way of other visitors and tourists who were on the trail and lost his footing in the process. In a TV interview that I saw, he said that he remembers slipping but cannot remember anything that transpired past that point. Remarkably, the boy did not sustain any major or life-threatening injuries; literally walking away from the accident with a few minor bumps and bruises.
Of course, the narrative being spun around this story is that Wyatt Kaufman is lucky. He’s lucky to be alive. He’s lucky he wasn’t more severely injured. But God. He’s a miracle worker. He doesn’t need luck to do miraculous things. Whether Wyatt realizes it or not, he’s still alive to tell such an unbelievable story about how he overcame death from a near-100-foot fall because he is BLESSED. Neither Wyatt nor I can explain why God chose to spare him when many others sadly were not spared from the same type of incident. All I know is God showed up with a miracle in this young man’s life for the world to see.
Final Thoughts | Believe in God to Believe in Miracles
Now, I don’t know if Wyatt has a relationship with God. I don’t know if he believes in God or if his mother believes in God. But I pray that regardless of where Wyatt stands right now, he will draw closer to God as he continues throughout this journey we call life. I hope and pray he allows the Father to use him to win souls for the Kingdom. After surviving a fall that could’ve ended his young life, he has such a powerful testimony that can’t be ignored or denied. What’s more, Wyatt’s story is proof that God is still in the business of performing miracles. No matter how much people try to attribute something like this to something else, it’s all about God. How great Thou are.
