It seems living a balanced life is a luxury.

I am trying something new here and figured why not share more tips on how to care for mental health and well-being through physical practices. It is clear we have the emotional and spiritual department covered, but mental health and well-being is just as important. Fact is, we should be taking more mental health days to rest and relax. It is not too often we get the luxury to do so unless we are going on vacation. And let's be honest, we tend to pack our vacations with activities, leaving little room to do nothing. We have been conditioned to constantly be on the go. Slowing down seems redundant. Oddly enough, we have gotten really acquainted with the rat race and being a hamster on a wheel is all we know. But you know, like I know, that way of living is not healthy. Balancing life can be hard but it is necessary.

If you reside in Texas, you are experiencing extreme heat. Even if you are not in Texas, I am sure you have gotten a taste of the increasing heat index. During these times, cold showers are highly recommended. But why not just take it a step further. There’s nothing like a spa session after a hot day in the sun.

Here’s how to do it.

The necessities!

✨ Epsom salt

Grab your favorite scented pack or the basic one. Tea tree and eucalyptus is great for relaxation.

✨ A Shower and Tub

For your soak session + cold shower

✨ Exfoliating Scrub

cleanse the body of dead skin cells

✨ Bristle Brush

gather dead skin cells + rejuvenate blood flow ( https://www.healthline.com/health/dry-brushing#how-to )

✨ Facial Clay Mask (or mask of your choice)

It’s best to get the mask for your skin type. If you have oily skin, a dry mask is great. If you have dry skin look for a mask with hydration and moisture.

✨ Facial Cleanser

Gotta get that skin clean and clear. Wash ✌🏽x’s.

✨ Facial Moisturizer + Sunscreen

You want less wrinkles, don’t wash your face or leave home without it.

✨ Foot Scrubber

Nobody likes rough feet. Well at least I don’t. Keep ya dawgs 🐶 to ya self if you can cut a rug (literally).

✨ Body Wash

I love love a good Shea butter + honey + almond scented body wash. Grab the scents you love most.

The setup!

📌 Do your soak and sauna session first. Put your mask on prior to. Soak for 30 minutes if possible. No distractions. Try being in the moment.

📌 Next is your shower session. Cleanse with body wash (do this twice, before your exfoliation and after). Then, it’s time to scrub those feet! Use your exfoliating scrub with your foot scrubber to help break up dead skin.

📌 And now we brush. Yes, you are literally brushing your skin with a bristle brush. Trust me it feels amazing!!!! Do this all over. Water temp should be warm.

📌 Up next is face time! Rinse your mask off, and cleanse with your facial cleanser. If you have a face scrub, now is the time to use it.

📌 Once you are completely clean… it is time for that cold shower!!!! Gradually turn the water from warm, to cool, to cold. If you have a spa like shower head even better. Sit with coldness for 2-3 mins. At this point it should feel good considering the contrast from hot to cold. Plus there are great benefits to cold showers. ( https://www.uclahealth.org/news/6-cold-shower-benefits-consider )

📌 Finally, once we’re out the shower, we moisturize our skin. Don’t be so quick to towel dry. Air dry. Right before you are completely dry apply a sealant to help the water infuse into the skin for optimum hydration/moisture. I like to use an aloe to seal in the moisture prior to applying body butters/oils but use your preference. Do this all over unless you have combination skin. You don’t want to over saturate oily patches, it’s the perfect recipe for body acne.

Final Thoughts | Luxury Starts At Home

At home spa dates are also great when you consider the cost. You would be lucky to pay anything short of $150 for a good spa session. That in itself could cause us to limit this kind of activity. But if you needed to hear it, I will be the first to tell you. You deserve luxury and you are worthy! Living a balanced life, just like luxury starts at home. When you start taking care of yourself at this level, you will notice your self-esteem increases. You might just start feeling yourself (lol)! And by the way, that is a good thing! Confidence is key and we should feel good about ourselves, not because of what we have but how we treat ourselves. That is what sets the tone for how we allow others to treat us. Standards baby, we have to have standards!

P.S. For the record, I’m not a dermatologist but I do have common sense and I love a good spa day. So much so, I’ve learned how to treat myself at home. These are just a few of my tips. If you find this helpful, Save it for later, share with a friend and try it yourself.
