I'd be lying if I said I didn't understand the craze for coffee. I too have waken up and instantly thought of the aroma which signaled to my feet to walk to the kitchen to make a fresh brew. While some prefer cold coffee, that's never been my jam, although I've enjoyed it a few times this lifetime, I desire a hot cup of deliciousness. I've went through phases where my day didn't start until I had it, specifically black coffee with honey or caramel or Mexican coffee. Don't let it get cold out! I'm not leaving the house without a hot cup in my hand. BUTTTTTT... then there's the crash that comes with it and let's not forget the bubble guts! Truth is, I can live without either of those because like, whyyyyyy?!!!
I was introduced to matcha back in 2019 while working at Black Swan Yoga Houston. It was one of those random cold days I walked in the studio (we shared space with Juice Land) and wanted something hot to warm me up. The worker suggested the Goldyn Mylk coffee latte with matcha instead and I'll just say I fell in love. I can't remember if I paid attention to whether I had the bubble guts or not, but I do remember I did not crash. The energy boost was subtle but powerful and I can't say it enough, the taste was delicious! This was now my go to hot drink at this place.
Now fast forward to 2023. I frequent different cafes and Starbucks often when I want to work away from home. I mean who doesn't love Starbucks right?! Free wifi, good coffee, and delicious bites. You can't go wrong! Well that is until your daily budget says let's find a better way. I'd come across a Starbucks matcha recipe on TikTok, that tho delicious, cost $8.63 a pop. After purchasing it a few times, I knew it was time to get creative. I found a great alternative at my local Kroger. One pack of Jade Leaf matcha powder cost the same as one cup from Starbucks and comes with 15 teaspoons per pack. Based on how strong you like it, one serving takes between 1/2 to 1 teaspoon. That's 15-30 cups of deliciousness, and easily 25-50 cents per cup! I call that a win! Now if you want all the bells and whistles of Starbucks, it still comes out much cheaper when you make it at home. I find I only have to add oat milk, honey and maybe a little coconut oil whipped cream when I want a lil' razzle dazzle. The best part about is, my energy is through the roof but not in an anxious way. I am clear mentally and focused, yet calm.
Final Thoughts | Coffee Vs Matcha?.... Matcha For The Win!
Though coffee is tasty, I wonder if it's the ritual and aroma that keeps most hooked. Just think, the process of pouring your water in the coffee maker and prepping your grounds with it, plus the scent of it all, it's hypnotic. To then pour it in a cup from the coffee pot like you may have seen your elders do. It can be nostalgic and satisfying. You know you'll get the energy boost but you also know the bubble guts are coming too. Coffee runs right through us. So why not make a better choice. The process of making matcha is different of course. You'll have to boil your water or milk in a kettle and then pour and mix. Unlike coffee, you will have to prepare each cup individually which is cool because it requires you assess if you really need that second cup. With coffee, it could be a habit to go for the second serving after the crash from the first one. With matcha, you'll notice your energy is still high, you could just be craving the taste or thirsty all together. In this case, it's the perfect time to drink some water. See we're already creating better habits! The aroma of matcha is also different, it's not hypnotic but it's fresh. So if you were to ask me, coffee vs matcha, which one? I'm going for matcha for 300 Alex!
