Healthy Eats | 3 Ways to Eat Oats for Breakfast

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Breakfast Oats Anyone?

If you are anything like me, you love, love oatmeal. It is something like a breakfast comfort food if served hot and always reminds me of a country kitchen moment. I am not sure why but it does. It is like a warm hug from grandma. Clearly, it is no surprise I've explored different ways to enjoy grandma's country kitchen hug. In today's blogpost we explore my top three ways to make oats.

All The Ways!

First, Warm cooked oats.

I like the old fashioned cut, and use oat or coconut milk instead of water to boil. What I love most about making them this way is the serving size. It actually feels like I am having a full meal. With just a few added ingredients like honey, cinnamon, butter, almonds and apples, my taste buds get the sweetness they are craving and the right mixture of crunchy, soft and savory. Not to mention my tummy is full. This meal could easily satisfy my hunger for 3-4 hours.

Next Up, Overnight oats!

I remember the day I was introduced to this amazing creation that we all know as overnight oats like it was yesterday. I was working at the yoga studio and one of my employees offered to let me try hers. After the first taste, I was in love. So in love, I jokingly asked her if I could have them. I was joking but not really. All I knew is I had to incorporate them into my weekly meal prep. This is what I love most about overnight oats. You can make them in batches. They are easy to prepare and you can take them on the go. I use the same ingredients I use for warm cooked oats but instead of a bowl, I put everything in a plastic cup, adding my oats first, milk second, apples next, almonds after, honey last, and seal it with a lid, and pop it in the refrigerator overnight. Just like that, wahla! We have a weeks worth of overnight oats. You can have them for breakfast or as a snack. They're super convenient.

Lastly, Chocolate Oatmeal Bars.

Snack anyone? This is also a cool way to have oats on the go and you can prep them in batches. There are a few differences in preparation and ingredients and of course it is at best a snack. But let's get into. For your ingredients, you are going to need oats, peanut butter, honey, melted butter, and chocolate chips. You'll mix your oats with the peanut butter, honey and melted butter to make the first layer of the bar. Once mixed together, spread your mixture on parchment paper in a baking pan evenly. Put your chocolate chips in the microwave for approximately 2 minutes or until melted, then pour evenly on top of your oat mixture for the second layer. If you want to add a third layer, you could add walnuts, pecans or almonds to give it a crunch. Once all layers are complete, stick that bad boy in the oven to bake for 10-15 minutes. And what do you have there, your own homemade oatmeal breakfast bars! Mama we made it! Healthy eats doesn't have to be a difficult concept. We just have to be innovative.

Healthy Eats | Oats and Carbs

As I've stated I absolutely love oats, but for more than one reason. Of course, they feel like a hug from granny, they make for easy meal prep, and they are delicious. But there is more. Oats are a good source of carbohydrates. What are carbs, you ask? Carbohydrates are one of three food macronutrient groups needed for a balanced diet and are a good source of energy. If you have started a healthy lifestyle regimen, you may or may not have heard of macros. In the fitness world, protein is all the rage and most are more familiar with protein than carbs and fats. But the truth is we need all three to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
