Healthy Eats | Breaking a Fast | Green Leafy Soup

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Breaking a fast can be tricky.

First of all, if we are going to be speaking about breaking a fast, we have to first acknowledge that you are fasting or wanting to. I know you cannot see my face on the other end of this virtual experience, but just know I am smiling. Fasting has always been a favorite topic of mine but not for obvious reasons. Most people consider fasting for its health benefits, which are incredible by the way. But it is deeper than that, and that's what I like to talk about. Fasting is more spiritual than it is physical. Physically, it is an auto-reset for the body. If you are wanting to heal from any sickness or dis-ease consider adding fasting to your health routine. It is something like a natural remedy. Most holistic health practitioners will recommend fasting as a medical practice before advising traditional pharmaceuticals. I'd be lying if I didn't tell you, Big Pharma doesn't really profit when you know the body can heal itself. But let us get to the fun part about the practice of fasting. Once it becomes a discipline, it gets easier but starting can be difficult. Here is a few reasons why. If you are new to fasting, going without food is already frightening. You could be tempted when you experience cravings, the infamous detox headache and any thing that triggers your appetite. For example, the smell and sight of food. But let's say you are seasoned and have just completed a three day dry fast, meaning for three days you did not drink or eat. On the fourth day, the day you are to break the fast, you could want to overcompensate for the time you did not eat and binge. Take note here, you could get sick and experience bloat, vomiting and discomfort in your tummy area. If you are not careful, you could create an unhealthy relationship with food which could potentially lead to an eating disorder. And WE DO NOT WANT THAT! Take it from someone who has fasted for long periods of time and struggled with reintroducing my mind to the idea of eating consistently without guilt. The best way to break a fast is with juices, bone broth, smoothies or leafy green soup.
