Healthy Eats | Tuna So Good Recipe!

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Who else loves a good tuna sandwich? I know I do! Before I ever knew it was a good protein source, I enjoyed tuna. My grandmother would make it with diced egg and apples when I was a little girl and I plainly remember being super excited to watch her make it because I couldn't wait to eat it! When I became more health conscious, I realized tuna was a great macronutrient which solidified my love for it. When I moved to Los Angeles, one of the items I would order at a little Mediterranean cafe was the tuna fish sandwich but I quickly noticed everyone makes theirs differently. At the cafe, the recipe was tangy and complete with tomato as if were a meat sandwich in comparison to what I was used to and made on my own. I enjoyed the sandwich. To me, it was nostalgic, it reminded me of home. Nevertheless, my grandmothers sweet tuna recipe would have to be my favorite. As I have grown to love this dish, I have made it my own, and that's what I will be sharing with you today!

The Sweet Tuna Sandwich Recipe

tuna fish sandwich

Ingredients :

Chunk Light Tuna

Olive oil mayo

Sweet relish

2 Boiled egg whites

1 Apple (I prefer honey crisps, use your preference.)

2 slices of bread

Preparation : Start by boiling your eggs since it is the longest process for this meal. While they are boiling dice up your apple. A small can of tuna will not require the full apple. I use 1/4 for a small can, and a full apple for the large one. Mix your wet ingredients in a small to medium size bowl. How much mayo you add is based on preference. If you like a milkier consistency, you will add more, but 1/4 cup should be your max. Add your relish to taste (the more you add, the sweeter), but 3-4 table spoons should be your max. Once you have the consistency and taste you like, peel and dice your boiled eggs. You can keep the yoke if you like a thicker texture, if not, chunk it. Add your egg to your mixture, whipping it in until it blends with the rest of your ingredients. Now to plate it all. Toast your bread slices. Add an adequate amount of tuna mix on one slice and top with the other. Cut it in half for easy holding.

If you are looking to lose weight, you will need to eat at a calorific deficit, swap out the bread for gluten free crackers or plantain chips.
