On the journey to a healthy lifestyle, the hardest part tends to be managing what we eat. Last week I shared one of my favorite tuna recipe's, you can check it out here (add link). As we all know, tuna is a great protein source. To take it a step further, protein is a macronutrient necessary to building and maintaining muscle growth and essential for repairing and regenerating body tissues and cells. Protein is imperative for a healthy functioning immune system and manufacturing hormones. Basically, we NEED protein. Now that we understand just how important it is to our health and well-being, we have to consider better ways to consume it according to our goals. Too much protein can cause constipation, not enough (protein deficiency) could cause brittle hair and nails, lack of energy (feeling weak) and feelings of hunger. This brings me to this weeks wellness Wednesday recipe, a protein smoothie bowl. There are many ways to eat protein, and not all of them include meat. You can drink your protein or you can eat it like an ice cream dessert. Depending on your goals, whether weight gain or loss, you can make a protein bowl just right for you! Let's get into it!
High Quality Protein
Not all protein shakes are created equal. Many people make the mistake of thinking if it says protein on the canister, it should do. I encourage you to be more selective with your choices. The better quality protein you feed your body, the easier it is for your organs to break down and process. It may sound odd at first but it makes total sense now. Once I began to feed my body with higher quality food sources, my standards increased in all things. I stopped settling and accepting less simply by eating better. Funny how that works! I highly recommend Herbalife protein shakes. For my athletes and or those looking to gain weight, I prefer the Herbalife24 line, Rebuild Strength. For those looking to lose weight, I'd recommend Formula 1 Healthy Meal and Protein Drink Mix for added protein to help you stay fuller longer. If you are vegetarian, the Herbalife Select Plant Based Healthy Meal Formula 1 and Protein Drink Mix are my choice shakes. You do not need to add a protein supplement to make a protein smoothie bowl or shake. However, if you'd like to stay fuller longer and or have a daily macro count you need to achieve to meet your fitness goals, a protein supplement is optimal. If you do not have a Herbalife Distributor, I would love to be yours. Now let's talk smoothie bowls!
Protein Ice Cream Smoothie Bowl

1 organic avocado
2 organic bananas (1 to blend, 1 to top)
1 table spoon peanut butter
For weight loss, if using Herbalife Formula 1 Healthy Meal + PDM (same for Select Plant Based Program)
2 scoops FM 1 + 1 scoop PDM
8-10 oz water
I cup ice
1 organic avocado
1 organic banana (to blend or top)
Toppings: I prefer organic honey, almonds, coconut slices, organic blueberries, and sliced banana. You can use syrup, nut + fruit toppings of your choice.
Preparation : Mix your protein powders, milk or water, banana, avocado, peanut butter (weight gain only) and ice in a blender. The consistency should be like a malt, thick. Once blended add to a bowl and top with toppings. Sweet and simple!
